I had made paper versions of these as decorations before, but I had wanted to create something more robust and organic. I created an engineering drawing to go with my design this time in case I ever wanted it taken to shop to be made if I was not able to make it myself with a laser cutter.
I created the template from scratch and made a laser cut file that can be used to cut out the design.
