Xiao Lantern

Xiao Lantern

Inspired by Genshin Impact, I recreated the Xiao Lantern using images from the game and using PTC Creo to model the design from scratch.

From there, I did a series of fit tests to determine the tolerances for snap fits on for the 3D printed design in order to make it easier to assemble. Making sure that each part could fit together easily meant using a minimal amount of adhesives to put pieces together. It would also be easier to assemble a multitude of lanterns if I had wanted to create more than one.

For a fitment check I used the following 3D print from this instructable:
https://www.instructables.com/Objet-3D-Printer-Fit-Tests/

This allowed me to figure out how tightly I wanted to set the tolerances on each individual part based on my 3D printer.

After adjusting the tolerances it was then 3D printed and assembled. I made use of slotted joints for this assembly in particular in order to easily add in adhesive and snap parts together. I then wrapped it in saran wrap in order to figure out a paper template for the lantern. This would allow me to easily make a cut file and have each of the pieces of paper cut out automatically without me needing to measure each time. This is done by wrapping the object in saran wrap, placing painters tape over it, and cutting down each individual piece in order to perfect the pattern.

After pasting the pieces of paper together, I added in the LED candle light on the inside!
